Senate republicans denounce democrat bill to undo electoral college
Sen. Mitchell to lead fight on floor against Senate Bill 46
DENVER –Senate Minority Leader Andy McElhany, R-Colorado Springs, Sen. Shawn Mitchell, R-Broomfield, and Sen. Dave Schultheis, R-Colorado Springs, made the following remarks in response to the Democrats’ proposal to undermine the Electoral College:
“For politicians to push this idea — after voters strongly rejected it in Amendment 36 – is offensive,” said Mitchell. “Coloradans want our presidential votes to count for Colorado and not be buried by states like California and New York.”
Mitchell is slated to lead the Republican opposition on the Senate floor Friday regarding SB-46, which is geared toward gutting the process of how citizens elect the U.S. president. The proposal aims to join states together in a compact to send electoral votes to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular or actual votes during an election.
The measure’s prime sponsor is state Sen. Ken Gordon, D-Denver, who testified Wednesday in the State Veterans and Military Affairs Committee on behalf of the bill, which stalled during the 2006 Legislative session.
“It’s more than a little disturbing to see Senator Gordon, who aspired to be the state’s chief-elections clerk, be so willing to toss away the voice of our voters by pushing this propaganda,” said McElhany.
Schultheis mentioned that SB-46 is a slap in the face to the nation’s founding fathers.
“This is a move our founders would have found abhorrent,” Schultheis explained. “Colorado’s clout in the election of our president would be sorely diminished if this goes through.”
