Senate Minority Leader’s response to Ritter’s ‘State of the State’ address

DENVER – State Sen. Andy McElhany, R-Colorado Springs, offered the following remarks in response to Gov. Bill Ritter’s State of the State address Thursday:

“The governor did a pretty good job highlighting the problems we face, but he came up short on solutions.”

“Republicans already have outlined specific policy proposals, and we hope to find out soon what he thinks of them.”

“One important area is health care. We have proposed a ‘health-care connector’ that would put Coloradans in touch with the best available coverage and benefits. We also proposed a comprehensive audit so we can find and plug up any leaks in the state’s costly Medicaid program. The governor, on the other hand, outlined some pretty good health care goals, but few specifics on how to get there.”

“Transportation is another example. We’re proposing to put a dedicated funding source for our highways into the state Constitution. The governor has proposed a committee to study transportation issues.”
